Iridium Extreme Emergency Service by GEOS Now Available

Iridium Extreme customers now have several options to manage their communications during an emergency situation. Iridium has contracted with GEOS Travel Safety Group to support SOS distress calls made from the Iridium Extreme handset at no additional cost to the user. The service enhances the value of the programmable SOS button by delivering a fully integrated safety service to Iridium Extreme subscribers.

Using the integrated SOS button on the Iridium Extreme handset, customers will be able to speak with a GEO representative to describe the emergency and send their current location to assist GEOS in coordinating a response with local public emergency responders.

GEOS provides global, 24x7 support from their International Emergency Response Coordination Center (IERCC) located in Houston, Texas in the United States. The IERCC is responsible for receiving emergency alerts and notifying the appropriate authorities to carry out Search and Rescue (SAR) missions. With translation capabilities for over 200 languages, GEOS IERCC has assisted in coordinating thousands of responses in over 100 countries since its inception in 2007.

Iridium Extreme customers must register at www.geosalliance.com/iridium to initiate this emergency response service. Through the service, customers can verbally provide crisis details to SAR professionals, as well as send location data for response coordination with local public authorities. The Iridium Extreme SOS button functionality meets international standards for satellite emergency notification devices (SENDs).

Although the GEOS service is included as an offering for Iridium Extreme customers who register, the programmable SOS button can also be set toinstead call or message an alternate number. For instance, some corporations or organizations may prefer to have emergency calls routed to their internal response center or another SAR provider.

There are no additional charges to access the basic GEOS service. Purchase of an Iridium Extreme phone and a valid subscription is required. Standard Iridium airtime usage charges apply for the emergency phone call, or for SMS or location messages sent. Customers also can opt for enhanced, paid SAR or Medevac subscriptions through GEOS.

As part of the registration process, customers will be required to enter the following information:

  • Iridium Phone Number
  • SIM Card Number
  • Iridium Extreme IMEI
  • Name, Address, Email
  • Emergency Contact
  • Medical or Other Information

Registered customers will be provided with instructions to ensure proper set-up of their phones for GEOS emergency service support.
