Editor’s Note: This is quite an achievement to have a satellite in the extreme environment of space for that long.  Lockheed Martin did quite a good job on engineering this communications satellite.

The U.S. Air Force’s Defense Satellite Communications System (DSCS) B8 satellite, built by Lockheed Martin, has surpassed its 10-year design life of on-orbit service in providing secure and reliable communications capabilities for the warfighter.

Launched from Cape Canaveral on Jan. 20, 2000, the B8 satellite is one of 14 DSCS III spacecraft designed and built by Lockheed Martin Space Systems for the MILSATCOM Systems Wing at the Air Force’s Space and Missile Systems Center, Los Angeles Air Force Base, Calif.

Editor’s Note: We are very excited to see this service moving forward and have the ability to offer this to our customers that need an integrated solution of a smartphone that also has satellite capabilities.  According to the website, this service’s coverage will be the United States (Including Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands) and Canada.

It looks like they will be using 3G technology and an external satellite antenna when you are not in coverage of a 3G signal.  The most important thing we are looking for is what the price point will be for the per minute charge when you are using satellite roaming.  We will keep you posted.

TerreStar Genus 3G Satellite Smartphone

TerraStar - Mobile communications provider TerreStar Networks Inc. (TerreStar), a majority-owned subsidiary of TerreStar Corporation , announced today an agreement between TerreStar and AT&T to bring to market the first fully integrated satellite cellular smartphone.

The TerreStar solution will combine AT&T’s wireless connectivity with the ability to use an all-IP satellite network as back up throughout the United States. Using one phone number and one device, users will be able to access voice and data services in the United States, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and offshore coastal waters over either the AT&T cellular network or the TerreStar satellite network.
